Cry was originally written by Dmitry Ermakov in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1993 when he was working at recording and production Studio D2. It was part of a soundtrack commissioned by the then famous Russian clown troupe Licedei+ for their forthcoming tour of Western Europe. In the Licedei+ show, Cry was played during a tragi-comic anti-creation episode featuring a Russian peasant girl washing blood as it gushes from the World Tree that had been chopped up by an evil clown in a white doctor’s gown in the previous scene. Streams of tears burst forth from the girl’s eyes, washing the blood from the Tree and the ground around it. Miraculously, the tree sprouts new green shoots of hope. The original masters got lost in the chaos of Russia’s ‘wild 90s’ and only a scrap of paper with partial notation survived. This served as the base for Cry’s MetaQuorum reincarnation. The track retains the original’s haunting tension and despair which find resolution in the major key cadence. And it is, of course, so pertinent today.
