Simple Minds have simple desires. Simple Minds are easily washed and dried. Simple Minds don’t question their guidelines. Simple minds have a chance but change nothing. What is the way? Who knows it? Who dares? Who cares? Great cities are breathing smog and drinking poisonous water. They eat money and have bad dreams. Little villages have nothing and dream about a pair of travelling shoes. To move away from where they stand closer to the highway, to sell pies and hooks for the simple fish. Fish-eyes are surprised. They stare at the moon. From an icy bath of glass – their last hotel before the hell of the frying pan. Simple Minds sip mugs of cheap tea with a sweetener of absentmindedness. Simple Minds is a hard-hitting alt-rock protest song calling out complacent apathy in a society flooded with fake news, as the planet slips into chaos.
The track opens with a collage of newspeak that fades into basso ostinato, percussion, poignant synth guitars and intimate vocals. Long reverbs, heavy guitars, industrial drums and unsettling discordancy mirror the shift in tone, before an instrumental interlude with wide panning and melodic keys moves the song into a funky slap bass jam finale.
